My mom called me and said that our computer is not starting up. When I got home, I asked my mom if there was any power interruptions, she said no. All she knew was it didn't start up. I tried some stuff (that obviously didn't work) like using plugging the power supply and other components in individual sockets, fail.
Heres what happens in order:
- I press the power button.
- The Windows loading screen appears. The screen where the big "Windows" is at the centre with a load bar below it.
- Next, it stays black with a little underscore at the upper-left corner that blinks.
- Finally, the screen stays black, and everything stops. Even the keyboard Caps Lock and Num Lock doesn't work.
Its brand new. It hasn't even been a year since we bought it. Its operating system is Vista -which I don't think is related with the problem. Does anyone know how to fix this? Or any similar problems? What did you guys do?
Much appreciated,
Gerard
Does it allow you to type anything?
The blinking underscore? No.
Its just part of any ordinary boot (from my experience).
while the system is loading up. before you normally see any Microsoft logo messages or loading bars, press F8
this will bring up a boot option menu. Select last known good configuration and see if that fixes it.
Remember, before you normally see any Microsoft windows logo! this can take some trial and error, as you only have a second or 2 to press F8 in just before the Microsoft logo's come on.
add on from what dream master said, try safe mode of your "use the last good configuration" won't fix the problem.
if it is not working try to boot with log, and at the next boot shoot to safe mode and read what the boot.log said, you'll have an idea why it can't go through windows start-up.
but again most of the case is solved with dream master solution...
and if the selection of last known good configuration won't work, your last resort is to restore the installation using the Windows XP bootdisc.. but if still won't, Im afraid you have to reinstall your OS..
i think your operating system got corrupted it's oftenly happens with me either

so it's better to reisntall the operating system surely have stored all you data on secondary drives

I tried a bootdisk as my first option - it didn't work. So I tried the F8 thing - didn't work.
My dad took it to the shop. They said it would take around 2 to 4 weeks to repair. I have no idea why it takes that long.
Thanks for the help,
Gerard
2-4 weeks

are they going to make it againg..

)
I don't know. I think their just saying 2 to 4 weeks so that the people won't expect and be very demanding. Thats what I think. 2 to 4 weeks is a lot of time.
When you bring your computer into repair stores, 95% of the time they just reformat your drive and send it back to you with no data.
Generally not a good idea...
Old topic.
Anyway the problem was with the power supply.

That's really weird. Usually power supply issues aren't characterized by sometime like that.
Well, thats what Geek Squad said. They said it was some kind of over heat..
Bull(cough). Bad memory banks, cpu, even graphics card - that could be the problem. If it wouldn't start at all, or randomly turned off from time to time - that would be the psu problem.
Besides, 99.9% of all pc problems can be solved within 24 hours (48, if they have to replace some parts which they don't have in stock). I was cooperating with many shops and it never took more than 2 days to repair pc, even it was completely fried. And I live in Poland, which is the 3rd world when it comes to technology. Next time try to avoid this shop at any cost...
